Interesting Facts About Myriapoda
The Myriapoda (millipedes and their relatives) include a total of four classes: the predatory centipedes (Chilopoda), the tiny dwarf millipedes (Symphyla), the minute pauropods (Pauropoda), and the millipedes (Diplopoda). The Diplopoda, commonly known as millipedes, are the largest group within the Myriapoda, with approximately 13,000 species worldwide. From a nutritional perspective, they are important soil inhabitants, like oribatid mites and springtails, as they break down organic debris and contribute to soil fertility.
Diplopoda, as well as Pauropoda, are used in the BIOMES project as potential indicators for studying different soil types to better understand the degree of soil usage.
